Microsoft Research Asia, in
conjunction with Tsinghua University in China, have
developed a new mechanism for viewing desktop-targeted
web pages on the small 3" screen of a handheld. Instead
of dynamically reformatting the page, their system
displays the entire page at once and allows the user to
selectively shrink certain parts of it by means of a
single pen stroke, thus causing the desired parts to
expand as if zoomed in.
The system appears built
around certain assumptions of page design, such as
table-based layout and the use of sidebars and columns,
that while common on many sites are in fact antiquated
and not recommended design methods. When the new system
will appear in a shipping handheld browser, if ever, is
still unknown.
